The following is a partial listing of the more common types of equipment and technologies used within the Empire. Much of this equipment is of recent design and has been adapted from similar medical equipment of other cultures. The Rhiannsu terms have been translated to federation standard for easier access.

ALPHA - WAVE INDUCER The Alpha Wave Inducer is a device which may be used to induce sleep in most humanoid species. The alpha- wave inducer could be thought of as an electronic version of an anesthetic. The inducer causes the subject to enter a deep dreamless sleep during which surgical procedures may be performed painlessly. Alpha -wave inducers are not meant to replace natural sleep, and cannot be used frequently.

ANABOLIC PROTOPLASERS The anabolic protoplasers are devices are used to repair both internal and external body damage without opening the body cavities. These protoplasers use small forcefields, phase-modulated lasers, and anabolic accelerators to quickly heal injuries without scarring.

Anabolic protoplasers come in a variety of sizes for different repairs. Smaller units are useful for fine work involving the eyes and ears, while larger units may be used for larger wounds and even broken bones. The protoplasers have the advantage of temporarily sealing wounds with a type of Instant Regeneration to the area treated, but cannot replace surgery in serious injuries. For example, if used on a very deep stab wound, a protoplaser could be used to seal the outer layers of damages tissue temporarily to prevent further blood loss, but a subcutaneous hole would remain unless closed with surgery. The protoplaser can not repair incidental damage resulting from the original injury. For example, a warrior who has been stabbed may have the wound repaired in sickbay in 15 minutes, but will still have to deal with the resultant blood loss.

The ARA Scan is a type of medical scan that can be used to determine whether or not Humanoid subjects are answering truthfully. (It is similar to a Terran device known as a lie-detector).

nrai dkea (nrai dkea) AUTOSUTURE Autosutures may be used to close wounds in Romulanoid subjects. Although this type of suture is becoming obsolete due to the development of the anabolic protoplasers, they are still often used in areas of the Empire that are not as technologically advanced.

Oaht (OAHT) BANDAGES Within the medical field there exists a wide wide variety of bandage options. Simple bandages made of sterile, inert materials that do not bind with clotting wounds are common. Dermapatch (an artificial skin substance) is available in a spray applicator, or in larger pre-formed pieces.

BASILAR ARTERIAL SCAN The basilar arterial scan is a type of medical diagnostic test which evaluates the arteries in the brainsteam of humanoid subjects.

BICARIDINE TREATMENT Bicaridine treatment is a type of osseous regenerative therapy for Romulanoid fracture patients. It is used for those who are allergic to Metorapan, the more common bone regenerative treatment.

BIOBED Each Romulan medical facility is equipped with a number of biobed sensors and support units. Simply stated, a biobed is basically an orthopedically designed bed which incorporates an array of bio-function sensors designed to monitors all body systems. Biobeds can also be tied into a variety of remote medical instruments including the tricorder and have several medical gas and fluid connect points for various devices (including a surgical support frame). Each bed is raised to allow the medical personnel to comfortably examine the patient. Graphic displays at the head of each bed show the patient's current status at a glance. Restrains fields are available on most models. Biofilter Biofilters are devices designed to be used with transporters. This subsystem of the transporter is capable of scanning incoming transporter beams prior to materialization and removes potentially harmful disease and virus contamination.

BIOIMPLANT A bioimplant is any type of artificial organic material that can be surgically implanted into the Romulanoid body to replace damaged tissues.

BIOREGENERATIVE FIELD A Bioregenerative Field is an type of energy field which is used to accelerate cellular growth and tissue regeneration. Bioregenerative fields must be used with a sterilite unit is to prevent infections from being multiplied by the Bioregenerative Field.

BLOOD - GAS INFUSER A small medical instrument used to stabilize oxygen levels of a patient in respiratory distress.

drueae v'rhienn (drueae v' rhienn ) BLOOD SCAN A very simple medical test used to identify various alien races, including shape - shifters. It involves taking a small blood sample from the subject and analyzing it to determine the cellular make-up of the blood. Many species can be identified immediately merely by the color of the resultant blood samples. For example, Klingon blood is a lavender color, while Terran blood is a very dark red color. Although it is impossible to differentiate between Romulan and Vulcan blood on visual inspection, the blood screening test will reveal the difference at the cellular level.

latasa v'maelhih (latasa v' maelhih) BRAIN - CIRCUITRY PATTERN A brain-circuitry pattern is a medical diagnostic image which maps neural activity in a Romulanoid brain.

CARDIOSTIMULATOR The cardiostimulator is a type of defibrillator that can be used to restart a recently stopped heart. This device is applied to the surface of the chest wall and doesn't require surgical access to the heart. It does not damage the surface tissues.

CORTICAL STIMULATOR The cortical stimulator is used in the resuscitation of Romulanoid patients from a comatose state. It is particularly effective for head injuries.

CYTOPLASMIC STIMULATOR The cytoplasmic stimulator is a medical device used which can decrease and stabilize toxic elements in the body at the cellular levels. The device can be successfully utilized with most humanoids.

DELTA - WAVE INDUCER The delta-wave inducer is a medical instrument used to induce sleep in Romulanoid subjects. Unlike the alpha-wave inducer, this is not a deep, dreamless sleep state but a more natural form of sleep.

DERMAL REGENERATOR A small medical instrument which can be used to repair damaged epidermal tissue layers in most Romulanoids. This instrument can not repair damage to the deeper skin structures.

DETRONAL SCANNER The detronal scanner is a medical instrument which is used to read, classify, and encode the DNA patterns of living tissue.

DRECHTAL BEAM A laser-type surgical device used to sever neural connections of Romulanoid species.

EXOSCALPEL A type of electronic scalpel or knife which is essentially used to make surgical incisions.

GENETRONIC REPLICATOR The genetronic replicator is a recently liberated experimental medical device used to stimulate the genetic code of an individual humanoid into growing whatever types of cells are needed by the patient.

HYPOSPRAY The subcutaneous and intravenous administration of many types of medication is accomplished with the hypospray. This device employs a pinpoint high-pressure low volume microscopic aerosuspension stream, which permits low-viscosity medication to be administered through the epidermis. With the hypospray, medication may be given through the skin or clothing. Standard hyposprays are designed to accept a standard medication vial, which can be changed as required. In the field hyposprays may be loaded with an inert saline solution that serves as a vehicle fluid for several different medic-selectable concentrated emergency medication ampules.

MEDIKITS When in the field, Romulan medical personnel are issued one of a wide variety of available medikits depending on the mission and the racial composition of the away teams. These small, strap-on cases carry emergency medical supplies including medical tricorder, field hypospray, respirator, defib module, a selection of bandages and appropriate medications for the mission in progress. To facilitate appropriate, timely pharmaceutical intervention in the field, most drugs are contained in vials that can be inserted into the Hypospray. A few of the more common oral medications may also be included depending on the mission.

MEDICAL TRICORDERS

The Romulan medical Tricorder is similar to a standard tricorder with a specialized medical peripheral device. It is a hand-held sensing device which can provide both active and passive scans with detailed diagnostic readings of total body mechanical processes, organ system function, disease organism infiltration, and body electromagnetic conditions. In the field, the tricorder can access an updatable file of known medical conditions for most Romulanoid types and many of DNA based non- Romulanoids. The tricorder can be used in the following modes: Biosampler, Bioscanner, Chemscanner, Datalink, Environmental Analysis, Medscanner, Multiscanner, and Radscanner.

MICROTOME A microtome is used to cut very thin sections of organic tissue for microscopic examinations. This electronic instrument is very useful to acquire samples of diseased tissue for medical analysis.

MOTOR ASSIST BANDS Motor assist bands are electronic straps which can be attached to damaged limbs of patients to amplify the patient's own neurological impulses to the damaged limb. Motor assist bands are very useful for rehabilitation of damaged limbs.

NANOSURGEONS Nanosurgeons are a relatively new Romulan medical development. This type of suspension of nanotechnological assemblies are used to survey cellular genetic damage and effect repairs. Nanosurgeons are useful to repair cellular genetic damage which is unresponsive to pharmaceutical treatments.

NEURAL TRANSDUCER Neural transducers are medical devices that are actually very similar to the motor assist bands. However, neural transducers are temporarily and/or permanently implanted in humanoid patients to increase the transmission of neural impulses from the brain to the affected area of the body. Neural transducers are frequently used for patients with spinal cord damage.

NEURAL STIMULATOR The neural stimulator is a medical device which is used with Romulanoid patients who have suffered some form of neuro-synaptic failure. Neural stimulators may be used to attempt to unconscious and/or comatose patients. This is particularly useful to treat a patients who have suffered central nervous system shock from the higher settings of a Phaser or disruptor rifle.

OSTEOTRACTORS Osteotractors are medical tractor beams used to set and immobilize a broken bone prior to treatment with a Protoplaser. They act as a temporary cast during the treatment process.

PHYSIOSTIMULATORS Physiostimulators are medical devices used toincrease metabolic functions in Romulanoid patients. PLASMA INFUSION UNIT The plasma infusion unit is a medical instrument used for transfusions of blood, blood plasma, and/or electrolytes into Romulanoid patients.

.PSYCORDER Similar to the standard medical Tricorder, the Psycorder can also be used to record past memories of Romualnoid subjects. It is most accurate when used to retrieve memories within the last 24 hours.

SCALPELS Within the Empire, there are many different types of surgical scalpels. The three main varieties are: traditional cutting blades, laser scalpels that cauterize as they cut, and nanotech scalpels that separate tissues along cellular lines without damage. Each type is used in different surgical situations. The laser scalpels help minimize blood loss, an important consideration when the patient has already lost a considerable amount of blood or when replacement supplies of genetically rare blood types are unavailable. Traditional cutting blades require no power supply and quickly slice through most matter with minimal effort. This can be an important option in primitive field conditions. Nanotech scalpels cause minimal disruption of tissue but operate very slowly. Current research is ongoing relating to a type of experimental scalpel that utilizes Transporter technology.

OVERHEAD CONTAINMENT FIELD SENSORS The overhead containment field sensors detect biological contamination and activate emergency containment fields to prevent contamination of an area by most organic lifeforms.

SONIC SEPARATOR A very delicate medical device used to separate tissues into very fine bundles. The sonic separator is primarily used in brain operations, but is also useful in other areas of the body which have very small or very delicate arteries, veins, and nerves (such as the eyes, or finger-tips).

STASIS FIELD GENERATOR The stasis field generator is a portable emergency device that must be used in certain emergencies when a patient cannot be stabilized and requires treatment that is not immediately available. The stasis field generator significantly slows all biological activity within the perimeter of the field, placing the patient in a sort of suspended animation. The patient will not be aware of any passage of time while under the influence of a stasis unit, since the biochemical activity of the patient's brain is effectively halted. Synaptic induction. Technique in neurotherapy used for patients suffering from traumatic memory loss.
